While in Carson City, Martha enjoyed belonging to bingo clubs and playing Keno. She was tickled when she won a washer and dryer for her home. They also vacationed outside of Elko, Nevada in the Ruby Marshes, enjoying the wide-open spaces and being able to hunt and fish in a land of plenty. (Elizabeth says that she never remembers any normal food at their table while growing up, just this weird stuff - duck, pheasant, venison, dove, and lots of fish. Our pallets were broadened at a very young age, and youth has no appreciation for the fine things in life.)

In their retirement they moved back to Los Angeles County to Agua Dulce. Still spending their vacations in Elko and enjoying living below their son's home and having their grandchildren under foot.

Marty was never one to sit still, spent hours with her Grandchildren teaching them home arts and encouraging them to be their best. She wrote a few poems that were printed in modern maturity in her retirement and loved collecting 1st Edition books, she was an avid bingo player at the club in Canyon Country until she was unable to drive.

As Paul and her became more house bound she loved being with her "Paulie" and they played pinochle, backgammon and chess together. At this time they engaged the joy of their last years, Toni Perkins. Toni became a constant companion, helpmate and best friend. Toni was by their side in the last years of their live constantly encouraging them to take care and taking care of them when they could not for themselves. Elizabeth, the youngest granddaughter has been the shoulder, Marty leaned on in her declining years and when the time came and she could no longer handle her own affairs (with a bit of a fuss - but that was grandma) she handed over the reins to Liz feeling confident she would make the right choices for her care.

Marty was struck with Altizmers in her declining years, broke her hip and was bed ridden for the last three years of her life. For as long as possible she spent those years in her favorite place, looking over the land she had become to love so well (Agua Dulce).
