Joe Mayagoitia

This is a memorial to Joseph Horacio Mayagoitia, born on March 7, 1907.  He died quietly at home in October of 1991.

We will always remember you with the eyes of love Grandfather!

He was the best of us.  He taught us to do our best and we would succeed despite ourselves.

He began life as the brother of Alfredo. The second child  of five children born to J. Mayagoitia and Isabel Delgado.  His family grew to include Jimmy, Amparo and Estella.

His father died when he was young and his mother remarried Juan Oroscoe. The family then added Cecilia and Ernesto to the family and he became one of seven.

He was a quiet studious student never bothering to answer questions but quick enough to correct the teacher if wrong. His wife to be, Isabel use to sit behind him and make faces at him while he studied.

He began his career in the cooper mines of Jerome, Arizona, where he learned the craft of cabinet making.

He married Isabel Lopez and had three daughters, Irene, Sylvia and Clara.  He built his home in the hills of Jerome with the help of his family.  After his brother in-law died in a mine collapse, Isabel soon urged him to move west and out of those dangerous mines.

He move to the San Fernando Valley at a time when the community was in it's infancy.

He went to work at Lockheed working in Cabinetry for Airplanes.  Once again not saying much until he had something to fix, he was eventually promoted to Supervision.  During his tenure with them he was garnered two cost reduction awards.

He loved working with his hands from building his own TV's and Radios to making the cabinets and furnishings in his home.  The mural on the wall of the living room still gives pleasure to his family.

His daughters married and he became a grandfather.    His family grew to include 10 grandchildren. Sundays at Grandpa's meant something new on the barbeque or maybe if we were lucky an apple pie!  Everyone loved what grandpa cooked.  From homemade salsa to homemade beef jerky.

He took the time to listen and paid attention to one an all.  Each of his children and grandchildren remember him for his generosity of time, love and money.

In his retirement he traveled as he had planned until his diabetes and stokes disabled him.  Then he remained at home with Isabel at his side until he was ready for that new journey unto the light.
